Xbox Series X & PlayStation 5 SSDs Are More Important Than You Think. Here’s Why

  • The Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 will have extra powerful SSDs.
  • One developer showcases just how useful they’ll be.
  • How innovative will next-gen really be?

The next-generation discourse is full of SSD talk. Both the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 have powerful solid-state drives, with the latter console making it a top-selling point.

However, I must stress just how vital this new addition is. After all, SSDs enable near-zero second load times and much bigger worlds without hampering performance.

But one developer revealed yet another reason this hardware is so essential: cut features.

Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 Will Benefit Big

In an interview with wccftech, Firesprite Games, the team behind The Persistence, claims that in game development, many features must be cut to keep loading times low. The inclusion of SSDs not only means bigger games but more exciting things to do within them.

The Persistence game director, Stuart Tilley, explains further:

It just is super exciting for us to be able to make our ambitions greater, sometimes you might have to discard a feature because it might require a long load, for example. Now, in the future, that may not be a problem. That’ll very much directly allow us to make better games, I think that that’s absolutely true.

Maybe SSDs will be the end of empty open-world games. Instead of dull, repetitive tower missions in Ubisoft games, we might see more creative content like, I don’t know, invading a cruise ship.

SSDs Will Make All of the Difference

Much like the partnership between Sony and Microsoft, it’s fortunate that both the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 will benefit from a new SSD. That said, some even say the PlayStation 5 SSD will beat the one in your PC.

That’s not to mention Unreal Engine 5 running on both consoles as well. Epic Games’ latest in combination with these SSDs should mean nothing held back.

Next-generation is shaping up to be something special, it appears.
